Thread. It was long believed to be a nonissue for Pern, following the discovery of AIVAS. Never again would Thread fall, the belief was. The Weyrs were unprepared. All but one had folded due to declining dragon numbers throughout the Turns. Only Telgar remained. And then the darkest of days came: the Red Star passed Pern again… and brought with it devastation.
Thread Fell. The results on Pern were catastrophic. Thousands of lives were lost in the onslaught, human and dragon alike. Though Telgar took to the skies to combat the menace, there were simply not enough dragons to handle the assault and more lives were lost than saved. The Holds and Weyr were in ruins.
And then they Hatched.
The first two of their kind, they were called Arryth and Enalath. Easily larger than Gold dragons, the pair were referred to as an Onyx and a Diamond respectively – for Arryth’s hide was black as the starless night, while Enalath’s was the moonlight to fill it. Their hatching changed everything. Capable of flying Thread as male dragons would and clutching dragons of unique colors – clutching females called Amethysts, and male dragons known as Garnets and Pearls, as well as Onyx and Diamond – Enalath was one of a kind on Pern.
But not everyone viewed her hatching as a good thing…
